Russia Says Killed Hundreds of Foreign ‘Mercenaries’ Working for Ukraine
Moscow said Thursday that it has managed to stem the arrival of foreign “mercenaries” in Ukraine over the past month and that it has killed “hundreds” of them.
“Hundreds of foreign mercenaries in Ukraine have been destroyed by Russia’s long-range precision weapons shortly after their arrival” to undergo training, the Russian defense ministry said in a statement.
“Most of the mercenaries have been destroyed in combat zones due to their low level of training and lack of real combat experience.”
The Russian army said it has managed to stem the arrival of foreign mercenaries in Ukraine, estimating their current number in the pro-Western country at around 3,500.
Since the start of May, the arrival of foreign mercenaries “has virtually dried up,” the defense ministry said, estimating that the total number “has nearly halved from 6,600 to 3,500 people.”
On February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin sent troops to Ukraine to “de-militarise” and “denazify” the pro-Western country.

Heavy Losses Raise Questions About How Long Ukraine Can Stay in Fight: AP
ZHYTOMYR, Ukraine (AP) – As soon as they had finished burying a veteran colonel killed by Russian shelling, the cemetery workers readied the next hole. Inevitably, given how quickly death is felling Ukrainian troops on the front lines, the empty grave won’t stay that way for long.
Col. Oleksandr Makhachek left behind a widow, Elena, and their daughters Olena and Myroslava-Oleksandra. In the first 100 days of the war, his grave was the 40th dug in the military cemetery in Zhytomyr, 90 miles (140 kilometers) west of the capital, Kyiv.
He was killed on May 30 in the Luhansk region of eastern Ukraine where the fighting is raging. Nearby, the burial notice on the also freshly dug grave of Viacheslav Dvornitskyi says he died May 27.
Other graves also showed soldiers killed within days of each other – on May 10, 9th, 7th, and 5th. And this is just one cemetery, in just one of Ukraine’s cities, towns, and villages laying soldiers to rest.

NATO Chief Says Ukraine Shouldn’t Drop Goal of Driving Russia Out of Crimea
Jens Stoltenberg has warned NATO should be prepared to support Ukraine's fight against Russia for a long time
In an interview with The Washington Post, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said Ukraine shouldn’t avoid declaring ambitious war aims of driving Russia out of the eastern Donbas region and the Crimean Peninsula, which Russia has controlled since 2014.
“They have the right to say that they are fighting for the whole of Ukraine,” Stoltenberg said. The Post report noted that many US officials privately doubt Ukraine could expel Russia from the region and that such goals would “doom Kyiv to an endless war.”
Stoltenberg has warned that NATO should be prepared to provide Ukraine with long-term support for its fight against Russia. “We need to be prepared that this may actually drag on for a long time,” he said.
