Germany says the biggest outbreak ever in Europe
LONDON, May 20 (Reuters) - The World Health Organization was holding an emergency meeting on Friday to discuss the recent outbreak of monkeypox, a viral infection more common in west and central Africa, after over 100 cases were confirmed or suspected in Europe.
In what Germany described as the largest outbreak in Europe ever, cases have been reported in at least nine countries – Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom - as well as the United States, Canada, and Australia.
Spain reported 24 new cases on Friday, mainly in the Madrid region where the regional government closed a sauna linked to the majority of infections. read more
A hospital in Israel was treating a man in his 30s who is displaying symptoms consistent with the disease after recently arriving from Western Europe.
First identified in monkeys, the disease typically spreads through close contact and has rarely spread outside Africa, so this series of cases has triggered concern.
However, scientists do not expect the outbreak to evolve into a pandemic like COVID-19, given the virus does not spread as easily as SARS-COV-2.
Monkeypox is usually a mild viral illness, characterized by symptoms of fever as well as a distinctive bumpy rash.
"This is the largest and most widespread outbreak of monkeypox ever seen in Europe," said Germany's armed forces' medical service, which detected its first case in the country on Friday.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) committee meeting to discuss the issue is the Strategic and Technical Advisory Group on Infectious Hazards with Pandemic and Epidemic Potential (STAG-IH), which advises on infection risks that could pose a global health threat.
It would not be responsible for deciding whether the outbreak should be declared a public health emergency of international concern, WHO's highest form of alert, which is currently applied to the COVID-19 pandemic.
"There appears to be a low risk to the general public at this time," a senior U.S. administration official said. read more.

WHO reportedly convening an emergency meeting on monkeypox
By Lee Brown
The World Health Organization is reportedly convening an emergency meeting on the alarming spread of monkeypox around the world — including a possible case in the Big Apple.
The United Nations’ health authority is bringing together leading experts on the rare disease as a number of new countries announced their first confirmed cases Friday, according to the Telegraph.
The main concern is how the virus — usually concentrated in West Africa — may be spreading, the UK paper noted, with many of the new cases among people who had not recently traveled.
The WHO will also be examining why clusters include gay or bisexual men, the paper said, with the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) giving similar warnings.
The reported emergency meeting comes as Manhattan specialists continue to investigate a potential case in a patient with symptoms who arrived at Bellevue Hospital.

FDA Approves New Intravenous Monkeypox Drug Treatment From PFIZER-Linked SIGA Technologies
Pfizer is apparently at it again, conveniently hitting another grand slam with another perfectly timed drug release for the latest viral outbreak sweeping the west – monkeypox.
After hitting it out of the park with their experimental mRNA Covid vaccine – typically what would be considered a once-in-a-lifetime development that’s cashing the company out to a tune of $1,000 per second – it seems like a long stretch that Pfizer would be involved in the ‘cure’ for the new outbreak, but hey, they apparently pulled it off.
Either way, here comes a Pfizer affiliate with another healthcare ‘solution’ as monkeypox becomes the new Covid.
On Thursday, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that it had approved the company’s intravenous version of TPOXX® (tecovirimat) for use in the US to treat monkeypox. The new drug was created by SIGA Technologies, which formed a partnership related to the drug with Meridian Medical Technologies in 2019.

Scientists at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are collaborating with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health to investigate a situation in which a U.S. resident tested positive for monkeypox on May 18 after returning to the U.S. from Canada.
CDC is also tracking multiple clusters of monkeypox that have been reported in early- to mid-May in several countries that don’t normally report monkeypox, including in Europe and North America.
For more information on exposure risk, see Monitoring Persons Exposed.
It’s not clear how people in those clusters were exposed to monkeypox but cases include people who self-identify as men who have sex with men. CDC is urging healthcare providers in the U.S. to be alert for patients who have rash illnesses consistent with monkeypox, regardless of whether they have travel or specific risk factors for monkeypox and regardless of gender or sexual orientation.
What people should do:
People who may have symptoms of monkeypox should contact their healthcare provider. This includes anyone who:
traveled to central or west African countries, parts of Europe where monkeypox cases have been reported, or other areas with confirmed cases of monkeypox during the month before their symptoms began,
reports contact with a person with confirmed or suspected monkeypox, or
is a man who regularly has close or intimate contact with other men, including through an online website, digital application (“app”), or at a bar or party.
What a lame attempt to continue this charade!
